Breed Info

The Bernese Mountain Dog, affectionately known as the "Berner,” is a big, beautiful and lovable breed originally from the Swiss Alps. The name "Bernese" comes from the canton of Bern in Switzerland, where the breed was developed. The town itself named after a Bear, the first animal it's founder met on a hunt. It is believed that the Romans originally brought Mastiffs into Switzerland which over time were cross bred resulting in a large, strong, and versatile working dog.
With their striking tricolour coats of black, white, and tan, they are stunning dogs & are also known for their calm, gentle nature and loyalty to their families.
Standing tall at around 63 to 71 cm at the shoulder and weighing between 32 to 52 kg, Bernese Mountain Dogs are definitely on the larger side. These giants are gentle and affectionate, with a heart as big as their paws! They’re known for being great family dogs, good with kids, and incredibly friendly with other pets and people.

Bernese are also highly intelligent and versatile, originally bred as working dogs on farms in the Swiss Alps, where they were used to herd cattle, pull carts, and guard properties, used in many regions of Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The German name Berner “Sennenhund” loosely means “dairy farmer’s dog,”.
The carts were generally loaded with milk churns or cheese or any type of small load which the dogs could carry with ease to the local factories or markets. They were also watchdogs for the farms and the farmers and this required a calm natured, self confident dog, devoted to his home and his people.
While they’re happy to chill out with the family on the couch, they still have that hardworking streak — making them fantastic companions for families or anyone who enjoys the outdoors (when it's not too hot!).
They may have a thick, luxurious double coat that requires regular grooming, but their loving, easy-going nature makes them worth the extra effort. Bernese Mountain Dogs unfortunately have a relatively short life span, an average of 7.5years is common so hitting 10 years is a huge achievement. Their big hearts stay with you for many years, filling your life with joy, love, and lots of slobbery kisses.
If you're looking for a loyal, affectionate, and utterly adorable companion, the Bernese Mountain Dog might just be your perfect match!
